Tideway School, Newhaven.

Contractor - Longley / Kier.

We were awarded the Architectural Metalwork package on this project which was very pleasing as this was the secondary school I attended. The old school was burnt down and the Main Contractor was tasked with starting again from scratch and along with the Architect they created a very modern and Academic feeling within the school which is a blessing compared with the old buildings that stood. We worked with the Architect on the design of our works which involved various site meetings and samples to get the approved design required. We supplied and installed all the access staircase balustrades which were a mild steel standard which was polyester powder coated, on top of the standards we fixed our grade 304 stainless steel component handrails and infilled with 10mm clear toughened glass infill panels which were templated on site to avoided any mis-measures, in turn they were held in place with glass clamps. We manufactured and installed the mild steel roof access ladders to various plant rooms, these were all galvanised because of the coastal location.

The Architect created an Atrium from basement level to second floor level to which we installed all the balustrades to match the stair balustrade design, we also installed the 2off basement access staircases from mild steel, they had a primed finish ready for decoration by others, the treads were a tray type design which allowed the contractor to infill them with a screed finish.

In the middle of the Atrium there is a steel framed lift enclosure to which we clad in toughened glass infill panels allowing everyone to see the workings of the lift, this I believe is the main feature of this space it draws your eye inwards and upwards which is very clever.

Externally we supplied and installed mild steel galvanised and polyester powder coated handrails and railings to various walls, steps and ramps to prevent persons falling.

We worked very closely on this contract with the Main Contractor whom we have worked with before, and the end result is something that Iron Designs are very proud of.
